Amber's Journal

On my second day of diving, I was starting to get the hang of the Reef. The trip on the boat was calmer (by the way, God bless the makers of Scopomine anti-seasickness patches!) and although I'd started getting a bit of water stuck in my ear (I kept a little of the ocean with me for days) I started feeling a bit more at home in this stunning aquatic world.

My pictoral catch of the day: a black lionfish! I'd wanted to snap a lionfish on camera in the Bahamas, but never actually spotted one, so I was really excited to find this little beauty! Lionfish have "no touchie" written all over them, but they're real little stunners-they're like moving flowers from Mars!

We also spotted Yellowtail Fusilier fish, our friends the Blue Striped Snapper, Potato Cods, cute cuttlefishes, and the other big highlight of the day TURTLES! Gorgeous, stately sea turtles. The ones we saw at depth didn't approach and were shy.

This day the divemaster led us through a short coral cave which was interesting, but very difficult. I actually didn't enjoy it that much since I was concentrating very hard on trying not to ram into things inside the cave, and once we exited the current threw us against the coral. I bumped the reef mostly with my tank (very, very, very sorry!) and came away with minor scratches. (My elbow looked oddly like someone had written on it, a la Dolores Umbridge!) Poor David though got the full Reef Spa treatment and had lovely gouges down the side of his leg. We managed to keep on with the trip, but they were a bear to keep clean and we couldn't find Neosporin or anything like it in Australia-we had to make do with iodine based stuff that's very bright and gory looking!
