Amber's Journal:

Happy birthday David! Today we started off our day with a nice gentle nature hike through some rainforest at Mossman Gorge where a local guide talked to us about some of the native species like vines that grab you/can be used for fishing, can those jungle vines be used for swinging, and how strangler fig trees grow around and crush other trees as a survival technique.

We had a nice lunch at the Silky Oaks Lodge which is another very nice looking hotel. Some of our party took a dip in the river-it's one of the few local ones that are too cold and/or swift for crocs, but I was feeling a bit waterlogged after 3 days of swimming so I just waded a little bit-it was very nice and cool.

We then took a quick tour of a sugar processing plant-sadly, no samples of sugar cane for us. Sugarcane's a big local crop in this area. Then, off to a dinner with a bit of bite-we had a private tour and dinner at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. We got to pet a koala, watch one of our guides being tormented by a giant snake, and watched crocs being teased with chicken tidbits. Their jaws make a weird sound when they snap together-almost more like the sound of a cork being pulled from a bottle, or someone slapping a handful of water.
