Amber's Journal

Today we learned that the airport staff at Ayers Rock Airport probably don't see very much scuba gear. David and I took our regulators, computers, masks and snorkels for our dives, and we had to carry them for the rest of the trip in our unchecked luggage. The luggage inspectors ran our packs three times before they'd let us through-very much a "What the hell is that and why have they got DIVE gear in a desert" moment for them I guess! At the other airports the attitude was "Oh look, dive gear. NEXT!"

Our dinner tonight was at the Summit Restaurant. The food is excellent, but you barely look at as you're goggling madly at the view. The restaurant slowly and majestically rotates over Sydney which presents you with a magnificent panorama of the city. It goes around about 4 times or so per hour, so the view slowly changes as you and the other diners happily debate whether you've seen a particular building again or have you seen the Sydney Opera house twice or three times now? It's really a stupendous view and really a great introduction to a very lovely city. David and I both agreed that downtown Sydney looks a LOT like downtown LA... but I think it's an ideal version of LA in some ways. It's incredibly clean, the old buildings don't look shabby, and almost everybody looks like they're on the way to a party-oh wait, that was just the herd of twentysomethings we saw wearing bunny ears. (No idea why of course!)
