Amber’s Journal

Pre trip:

My ever indulgent husband agreed for us to go to Germany to visit my sister with my Mom, then to take a tour of Germany.  Mom and I traveled ahead of David, and stayed with my sister and her family.  We had a great visit with them—Heather introduced us to the joys of German breakfast cake, showed us Kaiserslautern where they live, and took us to visit Ober and Niederlinxweiler, our ancestral village.  I showed my niece the basics of knitting, and was utterly amazed at the speed at which she picked it up!  I’ve taught a few kids to knit, and by far she was the fastest to grasp it.

While in Niederlinxweiler, we visited an antiques shop which is one of the older buildings in town, and may even date from sometime around the 1850’s or before which is when our family lived there.  We were also rather well-off in town if family legend’s right, so the antique shop might actually be a good example of the kind of home my family may have lived in.

Heather, Paul, and the kids came with us the next day to walk around Heidelburg and explore the town a bit.  We eyed German fashions and toys, and encountered the joys of a pastry called “schneeballen” or snowballs—according to our guides later in the trip, you crush them in the bag because if you bite into them, everybody knows you’re a tourist!

Many of the cities on our trip beginning with Heidleburg were covered with cobblestones or were very rough.  Mom had some trouble negotiating them, but throughout the trip, David was the ideal son-in-law as he constantly leapt to help her.   I think David deserves special recognition for how utterly good and patient David was throughout the whole trip.  This is why I love him so.

Day 1

I joined David at our hotel, and Mom came in the next day with Heather and the kids.  We had some more fun seeing the sights with them, doing things like posing at the Philosopher’s Bridge with the monkey statue—if you rub the monkey’s mirror you’ll return to the city.  That evening we joined the tour to begin the Disney part of our Germany adventure.  Mom and I were sad to say goodbye to Paul, Heather and the kids, but after finishing a little sniffling, and a lot of hugs, we got ready to have a lot of fun on our fairytale adventure!
