Amber's Journal

Day 5:

What? Another castle? Why yes!  Today we saw a gorgeous monument to Hercules which is being renovated to become a World Heritage site.  It was built by a prince of Kassel who also built himself Lowenburg Castle which is really more of a little love nest than a castle.  Like Neuschwanstein Castle, it’s built to look medieval, but with more comforts.  It’s quite small, and was never truly lived in, just used as a weekend getaway by the lord and his mistress.  It is quite lovely, kind of a royal playhouse!

That evening we had a tour of Rothenburg given by a night watchman.  Rothenburg had night watchmen up till the 1920’s!  These men carried a pike and lantern, and roamed the city streets keeping out evil doers, and making anyone who was out after the gates closed crawl through a teensy gate—after paying a fat fine of course!  Our guide had a rich, rolling voice and a dry wit—he told us stories like how an amazing earthquake knocked down only the abandoned castle outside of town…or did it get carried off by villagers who quarried it for stones? Hmm…so hard to tell the truth you know! *wink!*
