Amber's Journal

Day 8:

Today was one of the great highlights of our tour!  We were taken into the Alps to see Neuschwanstein Castle.  Every house we passed looked like an old music box my grandmother owned that was a little Alpine house.  They were all so utterly darling—gingerbread trim, bright colors, and pretty flocks of fawn-colored cows.  It all seemed so Disney—and then we got to the castle!

Neuschwanstein is unfinished.  I found it amazing that one whole floor is not even done, and that the throne in the throne room was never finished, nor any throne ever put in place.  Had I been Ludwig, there would have been a temporary one at least!  Poor Ludwig!  He had an obvious genius for architecture, and is much loved by the people today but was basically overthrown and probably murdered by his uncle.  Our guide said people say he “was suicided” since it can’t be proven whether he was murdered or committed suicide.  Some people say he was actually shot, and that a shirt with a bullet hole dripping with blood was spotted by a local man.  A fittingly tragic and romantic end for the Swan King.

We finished the evening with a dinner in one of the oldest beerhalls in Munich.  We had all kinds of German delights—pretzels, schnitzel, strudel, and sauerbraten.  We stuffed ourselves silly and laughed and cried at the slide show and the white elephant gift exchange.  Mom was pleased to get a teapot and cup, and David was thrilled to get a stein-cap for clipping onto a bottle.  He’d been admiring these, but the ones we looked at were too expensive.  Another member of our tour apparently found them at a better price!  Everybody that night seemed to get what they really wanted or liked!
