Amber's Journal - Day 1: David and I hopped over to Greece to start our tour early with a bit of diving in the Mediterranean which I was excited about. The dive company took us over in a skippy little Kodiak (boing...boing...boing) that was a little scary to ride in--the thing bounced on the water like a tub toy, but at high speeds! The Greek water is almost as cold as home, and as you can see from our shots that apparently near Athens it's very overfished. This has been the only dive I've ever had real trouble in--when I jumped in, the O ring in my tanks blew and I dumped a lot of air. We also had currents and went deep so I ended up really needing that lost air. There was a bit of miscommunication when I was signaling how much air I had so I even ended up sharing air with the divemaster--a little scary but this is why hitting unknown water with a good tour company and a really good dive buddy will keep you safe. Afterwards we canceled our second dive--the water was too much effort and not worth a second dive, both of us hated the bouncy boat, and as it sat on the waves the damn thing made me pretty sick with amazing speed. I was ok in time for a lunch of gyros with the dive shop guys. David and I both agreed these were really amazing gyros and some of the best food we had in Greece--I've had gyros before but these really were primo ones and very cheap! David and I did a bit of exploring on our own in the National Gardens which is a very beautiful park. This is a wonderful place with a turtle pond, FLAT walkways (really an issue in Greece!), lush flowers, and even a tiny Children's Library. I absolutely had to have a peek at that and thought it was darling! |
