Amber's Journal - Day 4: Time to pack up our bags, but not to head home! We took a short flight over to the island of Santorini. Greek security was pretty tight and they didn't much like our scuba gear. I didn't much like the woman who kept bumping into my rear--(lady I'm not a door, quit trying to walk through me)! But finally after our flight we touched down into Greek paradise! The water here was even bluer, the sky brighter and the towns more relaxed and less grafitti'd than Athens. We were whisked away quickly to the Volcan winery and museum where we had lunch, an excellent wine tasting, and a tour of their er...rather notable wine museum. The wines we tried were fabulous...the ones I remember best were the dessert wines. One was pleasantly raisiny, and the last wine we were given was made from grapes that had withered from frost which concentrates the juice. That wine was almost more like a liqueur...very rich, sweet and smoothly tasting of a hint of raisin. How does one describe the wine museum? It's too cute to be creepy, too creepy to be stylish, and really worth seeing for a laugh. There are exhibits of the wine making and farming processes that feature animated mannequins of deeply varying...er weirdness. Somebody didn't always get the sizes of heads and bodies right and some of the peasants are a little mildewy. But I have to say after a couple glasses of that fabulous wine...I laughed and enjoyed that strange little museum to the bottom of my heart! We also got to try our hands...er, feet at a bit of wine stomping--it takes a heck of a lot of stomping to get even a few drops! Thank heavens it wasn't up to us stompers to produce enough wine for lunch...we'd have been there for days! |
