Amber's Journal - Day 6: Today after an early start (eek, what is that sunset in reverse thing?) we were off to Akrotiri which is often called the Pompeii of Greece. This is not totally accurate...the people of Akrotiri apparently had enough time to grab all their valuables and bug out peacefully before their homes were covered by volanic eruptions. The ruins of the homes left behind are surprisingly modern--multiple story buildings, sewage, plumbing, sophisticated art and a design that doesn't seem dissimilar to many buildings in Greece today. The homes seem very small to my eyes... but I believe they had far less furniture that modern life does, and besides building your home from stone is hard work! Only royals get loads of floor space! At first this Bronze age settlement didn't look impressive--it just looked like jumbled stones. But as we walked around and learned that this place was ancient before Christ walked the earth and how very sophisticated their lives were it really became fascinating. Soon I could see modernity in the little staircases, the jars, the tiny roads and streets and I even could see how it would have been a very comfortable and beautiful place to live. I hope someday they restore a house or two totally including wall frescoes to give even more of a taste of how life here must have been. We rounded out the day with a lovely meal on Kamari beach--salads and a Greek pizza before boarding the highspeed boat to Crete. |
